From Risk to Resilience: Operationalising Responsible AI in Finance


Global investments in AI now exceed billions, with projected annual returns between $200–340 billion. But behind the promise lies a growing risk. Rapid adoption attempts have exposed governance blind spots that can no longer be ignored.

According to IBM’s 2025 Cost of a Data Breach Report, which looked at 600 organisations across industries, 13% of organisations reported breaches involving AI models or applications, and among those, 97% admitted they lacked proper AI access controls. In cases where “shadow AI” (unauthorised or unmanaged AI use) was involved, organisations saw an average breach-cost increase of about $670k, pushing the total breach cost into the ~$4.6 million range.

Recent headlines tell a cautionary tale. Deloitte’s AI hallucination and governance failure made news when a government-commissioned report in Australia, which was reportedly prepared using Azure OpenAI (GPT-4o), contained fabricated academic references and quotes from non-existent legal experts. Deloitte refunded a portion of its fee after the client raised concerns; the report cost was approximately ~$290k.

This is not an isolated incident. Stanford’s 2025 AI Index reports 233 documented AI-related privacy and security incidents in 2024 across industries; a massive 56% jump from the previous year. It is a signal that AI without governance is a liability, not an asset.

Under Article 99 of the EU AI Act, penalties for high-risk AI violations, including credit scoring and underwriting, can reach €35 million (~$40.5 million) or 7% of global annual turnover, whichever is higher.

Furthermore, India’s evolving regulatory framework places clear accountability on AI deployment in financial services. Penalties can reach ₹250 crore (~$28 million) under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDPA) for data breaches, ₹1–5 crore (~$112k-$560k) under Reserve Bank of India (RBI) norms for governance lapses, and up to ₹5 crore (~$560k) under the IT Act for unauthorised data use.

The message is clear: Responsible AI is a regulatory imperative, not a choice, and FIs must focus on governing AI as much as they focus on deploying it.

Without this, silent failures accumulate until they explode into public scandals.
